Lyman Ward Military Academy (LWMA) is a private, non-denominational, college-preparatory military school located in 174 Ward Circle, Camp Hill, Alabama, United States. It was founded by Dr. Lyman Ward in 1898 as a non-profit, coeducational, institution providing secondary education for the rural youth of Alabama.
Dr. Ward’s passing in 1948 led to significant changes. The school dropped its elementary and co-ed programs and adopted military training, consequently changing the school’s name to Lyman Ward Military Academy in honor of its founder. In 1966, the school adopted the JROTC program, and is currently assigned two active duty personnel by the Department of Army. In 1972, the school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
As a college-preparatory school, Lyman Ward Military Academy features a fully-accredited curriculum in a structured environment and classes that are small in size, typically just 10 students in a class. Small class sizes allow highly personalized teaching methods and foster a great deal of faculty-student interaction. In fact, each faculty member will serve as a mentor for a class and will provide tutorial assistance after school at least twice a week.
JROTC is an integral part of the education at Lyman Ward Military Academy, as it cultivates each cadet’s sense of leadership, desire for success, and wellness of both body and mind. The program also offers activities such as Color Guard, Drill Team, Rifle Team and Physical Fitness Team, with competition at different levels throughout the school year.
