Marion Military Institute (MMI) is a private, non-denominational, coeducational college-preparatory military school located in 1101 Washington Street, Marion, Alabama, United States. The school traces its roots way back in 1842, with the creation of Howard English & Classical School, later known as Howard College, by Dr. S. S. Sherman and the Alabama Baptist Convention.
In 1887, Howard College, now known as Samford University, relocated to Birmingham. The handful of faculty, students and then President of Howard College, Colonel J.T. Murfee, that decided to remain in Marion immediately reorganized and founded Marion Military Institute.
The institute is one of only five military junior colleges in the nation to offer unique military training programs. These are: the Army ROTC Early Commissioning Program for qualified students to obtain commission in the Reserve Forces after only two years of college, the Service Academy Prep Program—a one-year program designed to prepare students for entrance into one of the five U.S. Military Service Academies: U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Simultaneous Membership Program—a volunteer officer-training program that allows cadets to participate in ROTC while enlisted in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve, the ever-popular United States Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) for cadets who wish to become commissioned officers in the USMC, the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) for students who wish to earn an officer's commission into the active duty Air Force, the newest Flight Training Program wherein students learn to fly through a combination of computer-based, online ground school instruction and in-flight training as preclude U.S. Air Force and Navy Initial Flight Screening (IFS) requirements, and lastly the Leadership Education Program (LEP)—a leadership and organizational management training for a civilian career.
Marion Military Institute is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges. The accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation entitles all the services and privileges of regional, national and international professional recognition. The school is a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States and the Alabama College Conference.
