California
Los Angeles, largest city in Califonia
California is the 31st state of the United States of America. It lies in the westernmost portion of the country, flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Nevada and Arizona to the east, Oregon to the north, and the Mexico’s Baja California to the south. It is the third largest state in terms of land area, and despite that, the most populous state, with over 37 million residents.
Spanning 160,000 square miles, California has one of the richest and most diverse landscapes in the world. It has coastal regions in the west, the mountains of Sierra Nevada occupying the east, the redwood and evergreen forests in the northwest, and the dry, arid landscape of the Mojave Desert in the southeast. In the middle of the state lies the Central Valley, a huge swath of flat, productive valley that grows approximately one-third of the country food. Despite its image as a highly urbanized city, about 45% of the state's total surface area is covered by forests, which includes several world renowned and protected forests and wildlife preserve. The world’s largest tree, the giant sequoia named General Sherman; the world’s tallest trees, the giant redwoods; and the oldest tree, the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine known as Methuselah, are all found in California.
California was admitted into the union directly from the Mexican Cession at the final stages of the Mexican-American War in the 1850s. Following the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, California became a United States territory after 27 years as an independent Mexican territory. As such, the state’s culture has a distinctive Hispanic influence in it, although most clearly it has a modern Western culture characteristic of the United States.
The economy of California is the largest in the United States. It is the ninth largest economy in the world, well ahead of countries such as Spain, Canada, Russia and Australia. This is due to the success of several of the state’s major industries, in particular its entertainment industry, its agriculture industry, manufacturing industries that provide for important projects such as in aerospace and aviation, and more recently computer industries. Hollywood, a district in Los Angeles, is regarded the World Capital of Film and Cinema. Silicon Valley, a region in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California, is regarded as the Technology Industry Capital of the World.
Due to strong investments in the past, California has a well developed educational system. Several of its universities are regarded as among the best worldwide; in particular Stanford University, the University of Southern California, the California Institute of Technology, and the Claremont Colleges consistently rank within the top 100 universities and colleges worldwide by prominent news and media outlets, such as U.S. News & World Report and the Academic Ranking of the World Universities.
