St. Catherine’s Academy is a private, Christian college-preparatory military school located in 215 North Harbor Boulevard, Anaheim, California, United States. The school traces its roots way back in 1889 when Mother Pia Backes and several sisters, on the urging of Reverend Peter Stoeters, came to Anaheim and founded St. Catherine’s School, a boarding and day school for the local youth and a parochial school for local families. Later on, amidst financial difficulties, the school also became an orphanage in 1894.
In 1916, with the decrease of orphans and the improving way of life in the surrounding vicinity, the sisters began a campaign for more resident students. To provide students with positive role models, the school began hiring military officers. In 1923, the school adopted military training and Captain D.M. Healy was appointed as the school’s first Commandant of Cadets. The name was changed to St. Catherine’s Military School and later St. Catherine’s Military Academy. In 2010, the academy reverted to the original name St. Catherine’s Academy.
As a college-preparatory military school, St. Catherine’s Academy offers structure and discipline within the context of military tradition as well spiritual guidance and personal growth that is achieved by a Christian education. The academic program offered at St. Catherine is integrated with Christian values, with a staff of caring and supportive professionals focused on the specific learning needs of boys and young men. Classes are small, with a teacher to student ratio of 1:10 that allows a more personalized instruction for every student. The military program is to promote and foster self-discipline and leadership within each cadet. In keeping with the school’s philosophy, the military department’s primary objectives are to develop within each cadet a keen sense of honor, commitment, cooperation, initiative, discipline, leadership and respect.
St. Catherine’s Academy is accredited by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and the Catholic Boarding Schools Associations (CBSA). It is a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS).
