Georgia is the 4th state of the United States of America. It is located in the southeastern region of the United States, an area commonly referred to as the American South, or simply the South. As such, Georgia shares a distinctive culture with the rest of the southern states with regards to musical styles, sports preference, religion and cuisines. For instance, the people of Georgia are stereotyped as being soft-spoken, courteous and highly religious.
Georgia is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina to the east, Alabama to the west, Tennessee and North Carolina to the north and Florida to the south. The state has four distinct geologic regions. The northwest part of the state is the ridge and valley regions part of the Appalachians mountains; the northeast is the blue ridge region also part of the larger Appalachian Mountains range, so named for their bluish color when seen from a distance; the Piedmont region at the center of the state; then the Atlantic coastal plain in the southern half.
Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, Georgia primarily has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters.
The first English settlement in the state began in the 1730s, with the founding of the city of savannah. The city and the rest of the area was designated a British Colony in 1751 and Savannah became the capital of colonial Georgia. In the 1770s, Georgia became a significant battleground in the American Revolutionary War, leading to the Siege of Savannah in 1779. On January 2, 1788, Georgia ratified to the U.S. Constitution as one of the first 13 states to declare their independence from the British rule and form the United States of America.
