The Howe School (also known as Howe Military School) is a private, non-denominational Christian, coeducational college-preparatory military school located in Howe, Indiana, United States. It was established in 1884 as the Howe Grammar School for Boys, a preparatory school for young men who were seeking ordination to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church.
The school was named after Honorable John Badlam Howe who died in 1883. Fulfilling John’s last wish, his widow Frances Marie Glidden Howe took the $10,000 left by his husband and with the help of Reverend David B. Knickerbacker and Dr. Charles Spaulding increased it to $50,000 to establish Howe Grammar School for Boys. The school was later renamed The Howe School as honor to its founder. In 1895, the school adopted military training in its curriculum. It became fully co-educational in 1988, with Company A being the all-female company consisting of day students and those that live on campus full-time.
As a college preparatory school, Howe uses PAR, a unique individualized grading system that help students determine the path they want to take for college. Classes range from Christian Ethics to Honors English and post Calculus and fulfill the basic requirements for college. JROTC is an important aspect of the curriculum, where leadership skills and personal responsibility can develop. Students play sports, participate in activities and work their way through the ranks of the Cadet Corps, taking on greater responsibilities with each step.
As a Christian school, Howe maintains its historic affiliation with the Episcopal Church but admits students of all faiths. Students attend chapel four evenings a week and a full worship service on Sundays.
