Great Lakes Maritime Academy is a public maritime school part of Northwestern Michigan College located in Traverse City, Michigan on Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan. It is one of six State Maritime Academies that receives aid from the federal Maritime Administration and the only U.S. Maritime Academy on fresh water. In addition, it is the only maritime college in the United States that offers graduates the opportunity to obtain licensing on both the Great Lakes and the oceans along with an additional credential of First Class Great Lakes Pilot.
Great Lakes Maritime was established in 1969 to provide education and training to those pursuing a career in the merchant marine. The school offers cadets not only maritime credentials but also a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, enabling graduates to be better prepared for management level positions aboard ship or shore side. The college is approved by the U.S. Maritime Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Michigan Department of Education.
Great Lakes Maritime utilizes USNS Persistent, a Stalwart Class Tactical Auxiliary General Ocean Surveillance Ship (T-AGOS), as a training ship—now known as the T/S State of Michigan owned by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration. It was originally launched in 1985 as an ocean submarine surveillance vessel to tow highly sensitive sonar arrays to track Soviet submarines during the Cold War.
