Saint Thomas Academy (STA) is a private, Christian college-preparatory military school located in 949 Mendota Heights Road, Mendota Heights in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. It was founded in 1885 by Archbishop John Ireland as Saint Thomas Aquinas Seminary—a theological college for young men pursing priesthood and a college-preparatory school to prepare young men for university study. The school’s military program was added in 1890, under the name Saint Thomas Seminary Military Battalion.
In 1894, Saint Thomas was incorporated into St. Paul Seminary. In 1905, it became a military training school under the direct supervision of the U.S. Army and was selected as an Honor School by the U.S. Army. The JROTC program, using a national curriculum, began in 1916.
As a college-preparatory military school, Saint Thomas Academy continues the century-long tradition of offering high-quality education, character and leadership development through its accredited curriculum, structure and JROTC program. Academic success of every cadet is a priority, such that college and personal counseling is an integral part of the learning process. Health and wellness is also a priority, with many outdoor programs, including 14 athletic teams and more than 30 non-athletic co-curricular activities, many of which are compulsory and is part of every cadet’s program.
Since its inception, the heart of Saint Thomas Academy’s educational program has been the Catholic faith, and religion plays an important role in the education. Young men are educated in the various aspects of the Catholic religion, and most importantly, how to live the life of a Christian. The priests and lay faculty offer the students Christian principles through their teaching and by example.
