New Mexico

New Mexico is the 47th state of the United States of America. It is located in the in the southwest region of the country. It is one of the four corner states, so called for sharing a quadripoint where the boundaries of four states meet – the northwestern corner of New Mexico, the northeastern corner of Arizona, the southeastern corner of Utah and the southwestern corner of Colorado, where also the Four Corners Monument is located.

Common to the region, New Mexico is generally dry and arid, although there are areas having continental and alpine climates. The state’s geography ranges from wide stretches of rose colored deserts and badlands to broken mesas to high, snow capped peaks in the north. Despite the image of dry arid desert popularized by western films, a significant portion of the state is covered by heavily forested mountain wildernesses especially in the north towards the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

The first Europeans to settle in New Mexico were the Spaniards coming from Mexico in the south. The Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804 opened the area to exploring and trapping by American settlers. At the turn of the 18th century, many of the territories in the southwest region seceded from Mexico following the Revolution and Mexican Independence. In 1846, following the Mexican - American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, New Mexico was among the lands ceded by Mexico to the United States of America. In 1912, New Mexico was admitted into the union as the 47th state of the United States of America.
