New York is the 11th state of the United States of America. It is located on the East Coast region of the country, in the Northeastern region where it is bordered by Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the east, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west, and Rhode Island to the east of Long Island. Along with seven others states, New York comprises the Mid Atlantic states, also known as “the typically American" region noted for its affluence, with most of its member states ranking within the top 15 in the nation by median household income and per capita income.

In contrast to the usual perspective of New York as a highly urbanized sprawl, a major portion of the state is dominated by forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes. New York has several state parks and forest preserves, some of which are internationally recognized, such as the Niagara Falls State Park. New York has a humid continental climate that is influenced by two continental air fronts: warm air coming from the southwest and cold air coming from the northwest.

The first European contact with New York was the Frenchman Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. Dutch settlers occupied the area following Henry Hudson's search for a Northwest Passage in 1609 and in 1664, the English’s conquest of New Netherland put the lands that would become New York under the British crown.

New York played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War. Its strategic location made it a highly valuable foothold for both forces, and New York became a battleground for over a hundreds of confrontations. In 1777, the American forces won the Battle of Saratoga, which is often credited as the greatest American victory of the war to date.
