New York Military Academy (NYMA) is a private, non-denominational, coeducational, college-preparatory military school located in 78 Academy Avenue, Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, in the Hudson Highlands, at the foot of Storm King Mountain, and just above the Hudson River. It was founded in 1889 on 30 acres (120,000 m2) of land by Charles Jefferson Wright, an American Civil War veteran and former school teacher from New Hampshire.
Sebastian Jones took over in 1894 and under him, the academy flourished: from a small institution of 48 cadets, through a disastrous fire in 1910, and finally an extensive reconstruction program that developed NYMA into one of the most prominent college-preparatory military schools in the United States.
As a university-preparatory military school, NYMA offers structured environment, placing an emphasis on leadership development and community involvement. The school utilizes structure based on military framework to aid the rigorous, expeditionary curriculum. That way, NYMA graduates are thoroughly prepared and mentally-conditioned to seek out extraordinary lives of accountability and service.
Military training is an important aspect of life at NYMA. The school holds a decade-long affiliation with the United States Army JROTC, and the school is designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction as a result of the Annual Formal Inspection (AFI).
NYMA is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges and chartered, registered, and approved by the New York State Department of Education. Furthermore, the school holds membership with the Association of Military Schools and Colleges in the United States (AMSCUS), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS), and the Military School Band Association (MSBA).
