Oak Ridge Military Academy (ORMA) is a private, non-denominational, coeducational, college-preparatory military school located in 2317 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge, North Carolina, United States. It is the only boarding military academy in North Carolina and the second oldest military school in the United States.
The academy was founded in 1852 as Oak Ridge Male Institute, a training school for boys by Religious Society of Friends. In 1875 Professor J. Allen Holt and his brother Professor Martin Holt took over the school management and, under their leadership, Oak Ridge Male Institute became one of the best preparatory schools in North Carolina. In 1929, the school dropped its co-ed programs in favor of an all-male military secondary school program. In 1929, Oak Ridge expanded enrollment to become a junior college as well as a military school. In 1972, Oak Ridge became the first college-preparatory military school in the United States to enroll female cadets.
As a college-preparatory military school, Oak Ridge offers military structure, organization, and discipline designed to meet the best interests of the students. The curriculum is designed to be rigorous yet effective for each student. Classes are also designed to be small, with a student – teacher ratio average of 11:1 allows a highly personalized instruction.
Oak Ridge Military Academy is the official military school of North Carolina, as designated by the state legislature in 1991. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Additionally, Oak Ridge is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS), and the Association of Military Schools and Colleges of the United States (AMSCUS).
