Ohio is the 17th state of the United States of America. It is located in the Midwestern region of the country, bordered by Pennsylvania to the east, Indiana to the west, Michigan to the northwest, the Canadian province of Ontario to the north across Lake Erie, Kentucky on the south, and West Virginia on the southeast. Ohio is part of the Great Lakes region of North America, with 312 miles Lake Erie coastline which allows for numerous seaports.

Typical of the land in the Midwestern region of the United States, much of Ohio is composed of exceptionally flat till plains. The southeastern quadrant of the state is a rugged landscape defined by plateaus, hill and forests of the Appalachian mountain range. Ohio has a humid continental climate, with typically hot and humid summers and generally cool winters.

The first Europeans to settle in the lands that became known as Ohio were the French in the early 17th century. In 1663, New France colony was established to take advantage of the flourishing fur trade in the area. By the mid-18th century, a rivaling population of British settlers had also taken residence in the area, most notably the settlement that became present day Fort Loramie. After Britain's victory over the French in the Seven Years' War, the lands in the area were ceded to British rule following the 1763 Treaty of Paris.

After the American Revolutionary War, the British ceded claims to the present day Ohio territories. The Northwest Territory was created, followed by the founding of Marietta in Washington County, Ohio. In 1803, an Act of Congress approved Ohio’s sovereignty as a state of the United States. It was retroactively admitted into the Union as the 17th state in 1812, along Louisiana admission as the 18th state of the U.S.

Military Education in Ohio

Ohio has been involved in regional, national, and global conflicts since statehood. Long before becoming a state, centuries of continued conflict had existed in the territories of the state, between the white settlers and the natives, as well as the settlers themselves, particularly between the British and the French. During the American Revolutionary War, the British and the American settlers fought against each other, each aided by their Native Americans allies. When a heavy flood of settlers arrived in the area, the Native Americans began an armed resistance which led to the Northwest Indian War. In the War of 1812, Ohio played a significant part as it was on the front line in the Western theater. Several notable battles have been fought on its lands and in Lake Erie.

Due to a history of significant military activity throughout its history, Ohio is an ideal location for military education. The influence of Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Montgomery and Integrated Support Cleveland also made the state a prime spot for military schools.
