Benedictine College Preparatory was originally named as Benedictine High School, the change of name was due to the school's aim of wanting to have their goals evident in becoming more academically rigid; this was as of August 1, 2011. Since its founding in 1911, the school has stayed to be an all-male school and is the only Catholic school with a military academy type of setting for boys in Richmond, Virginia.

Aside from a strong academic curriculum, Benedictine College Preparatory also considers their athletic program an important part of the school system. Their basketball team has become a well known program in Central Virginia and has won a lot of state championships and State Catholic titles during the 70's and 80's. They also have a promising baseball and football programs.

Each student at Benedictine College are also required to participate in the Army JROTC program of the school. Their JROTC program holds distinguished ratings given by the Army; the Honor Unit with Distinction. The school can directly nominate a student to appoint to an ROTC scholarship or to a service academy. A lot of their cadets have already attended other military colleges and other service academies for further education because of this school advantage.

The school is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is operated and owned by the Benedictine Society of Virginia.
