Fishburne Military School is a private, non-denominational, college-preparatory military school located in 225 South Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia, United States. It was founded as Waynesboro High School in 1879 by James A. Fishburne, a student and protégé of the Confederate Army General-in-Chief Robert E. Lee. In 1881, the school became a boys’ exclusive boarding school and was followed by a series of name changes: Fishburne Home School in 1882, Fishburne School in 1883, and finally Fishburne Military School in 1886, two years after the school adopted a military program.
Fishburne Military School is listed on the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps charter and has continuously been rated an Army JROTC Honor Unit since 1924. The school is operated by the Fishburne-Hudgins Educational Foundation, Inc. a non-profit institution, since 1951.
As a college-preparatory military school, Fishburne Military School is known for its rigorous military training. The school is a leading military JROTC boarding school, having continuously held the honor school distinction for over 90 years. Through its military training and exercise, Fishburne Military School teaches important life skills, such as personal fitness, determination, leadership, self-discipline and management skills which will serve well upon graduation.
