Hargrave Military Academy (HMA) is a private, Christian l, college-preparatory military school located in 200 Military Drive, Chatham, Virginia, United States. It was founded in 1909 as the Chatham Training School (CTS), a general training schools for boys and the spiritual successor to the Warren Training School which closed earlier that year due to insufficient funds. In 1925, Chatham Training School was renamed to Hargrave Military Academy in honor of its founders Jesse Hunt Hargrave his son John Hunt Hargrave. The renaming also marked the school’s transition into a military school for boys.
Hargrave Military Academy is affiliated with the Baptist General Association of Virginia and emphasizes Christian education and military discipline with a focus on college-preparatory program. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees, many of whom are alumni and community leaders. In addition, the school has developed its own charitable foundation to allow philanthropists an opportunity to make gifts to the school.
The school is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school is a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States and the National Association of Independent Schools.
