Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) is a private, non-denominational, coeducational university-preparatory military school located in 614 S. Main Street, Woodstock, Virginia, United States. It was established in 1899 by the Virginia Classis of the Reformed Church as a coeducational boarding school for the rural youth of the area. In 1902, Howard J. Benchoff was appointed the school president and under his direction the academy went through significant changes. First is the expansion of the school facilities and as a result of an otherwise undocumented "incident", dropped the school’s coeducational program and limited the boarding department to boys beginning in 1910. The last and most significant policy was adopting a military training, which Benchoff described as a goal “to train the boys with a discipline that is valuable and give them that easy and graceful carriage which is an accomplishment in any gentleman's claim to culture”. The military program was not implemented until 1917. In 1930, the U.S. War Department formally declared Massanutten Military Academy a JROTC unit and placed it on a par with the highest rated military schools in the country.
As a college-preparatory school, Massanutten Military Academy offers structured learning environment that instills self-discipline, concentration on the task at hand and time management. The school utilizes mentoring approach that allows appropriate strategies for each student and helps ensure every student’s success, and with a student to teacher ratio of 1:8, teaching is highly personalized.
JROTC is a crucial aspect in the schools education. Every cadet’s participation is required in order to create a stable environment that is highly conducive to learning. MMA’s military program is consistently recognized as an Honor Unit with Distinction by the United States Army. Cadets who complete three or more years of JROTC and who choose to enlist in the U.S. Army may receive immediate promotion.
