Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA) is a private, coeducational, Christian college-preparatory military school located in 200 Academy Drive, Front Royal, Virginia, United States. It was founded in 1892 on a 26 acre land by Dr. William W. Smith as part of the Randolph-Macon College, a private liberal arts college located in Ashland, Virginia. The school has since grown into a 135-acre campus that overlooks Front Royal.
As a college preparatory school, Randolph-Macon Academy offers military structure, organization, and discipline that foster a high-quality learning environment. The curriculum is designed to be rigorous to meet the best interests of the students. Instruction is highly personalized due to the small class sizes, with an average teacher to student ratio of 1:10. The school also boasts of a mentoring approach as a mode of instruction. Students are grouped in four to eight according to their grade level and shared interests, and then these groups are assigned to a faculty member who will act as mentor and provide each member of the small group with guidance and support the entire school year. The mentor will “connect” with the student based on information submitted during the application process and will partake in college advising and discussion on the character issues and time-management issues that arise for every teenager.
Military training is an integral part of the education at Randolph-Macon Academy. Upper school students are required to participate in the Air Force JROTC program where they will develop, among other things, confidence and self-discipline, both of which aid them in their academic studies. The Air Force JROTC program will also give students the opportunity to learn to fly in school-owned Cessnas.
Randolph-Macon Academy is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
